Top Things to Do on 30A During Summer

From iconic amusement parks to world-renowned beaches, Florida has long been synonymous with the ultimate summer escape, and 30A is no exception. Along this scenic stretch of coastline, families, couples, and solo travelers find countless ways to play and unwind—whether it’s racing down waterslides, lounging by sparkling resort pools, or floating in the calm emerald-green waters of the Gulf.

While drifting along a lazy river is a perfectly valid way to soak up the sunshine (and at two of our properties, you absolutely can), there’s a whole other side of 30A waiting to be explored.  From sea turtle nesting and wildflower blooms to live music and ghost crab hunts, here are a few of our favorite things to do before and after a day at the beach.

Search for Sea Turtles

Get to know some of Highway 30A’s smallest, and most remarkable, residents. Sea turtle nesting season spans from May 1 to October 31, with hatchlings making their way to the Gulf in late summer and early fall, often just before sunrise. If you choose to witness this special moment, be sure to keep a respectful distance, remain quiet, and avoid using lights that could disorient the turtles. Afterward, reward the early wake-up with a stop at one of the many charming breakfast spots along the coast.

Pedal Past Wildflowers

Wildflower season hits its stride in spring and early summer, painting the roadside trails, coastal dune lakes, and state parks with pops of purple thistle, golden coreopsis, spiderwort, black-eyed Susans and more. With multiple bike rental options in the area—and complimentary bikes available to guests at many of our hotels—it’s easy to take it all in on two wheels.

Hunt for Ghost Crabs

Ghost crabs, known for their ability to blend in with the sand, are another creature commonly seen cruising down the beach after dark. A favorite activity among families is to bring a flashlight (red filters are best for the crabs) and wander down the coastline searching for them as they dart across the sand. As a guest of many of our 30A hotels, you can even book a private beach bonfire experience to enjoy some quality family time before the hunt begins.

Catch the Best Live Performances

Nearly every summer evening on 30A brings the sound of live music—and as a guest of a St. Joe property, you’re never far from the action. Many of our hotels and resorts host multi-night performances throughout the week at on-site restaurants. Catch the sunset from a romantic rooftop bar or sway to the beat while savoring fresh seafood at one of our lively, family-friendly dining spots.
